Carla McQueen & Baiju Varkey for East Chesterton

About Carla

I am highly motivated to support my community within the Labour Party.
I have significant knowledge in certain areas, particularly Education and the Special Educational Needs sector. I am eager to support my community and give back from the support I have received in the past. I enjoy debating politics and supporting people who need it most. I am loyal, hardworking and committed to whatever role I take on.
I have studied sociology and psychology which has given me a clear insight into society and behaviour. I have lived in Cambridge for 9 years, and I was brought up in Liverpool in a town called Kirkby it was a grim beginning. However my family was part of the Labour Party and they organised fabulous things for us children that I will never forget, fund raising to provide us with camping trips and so on.
I am interested particularly in preventing further poverty in the most deprived areas of Cambridge, giving them people a voice.
I am also interested in the environment in all aspects of it. Furthermore campaigning for more activities for our teenagers to help combat the high increase in anti social behaviour.
Social housing is also an interest of mine. It’s important to have homes for everyone in our community at an affordable rent or price.
I am keen to engage with the community to gain more support for my party and in particular getting young people involved in activities to benefit the community and to show how important it is to vote in both local and general elections.

About Baiju

I am honoured to be standing in East Chesterton as a Labour candidate for the City Council elections on Thursday 3 May.

I was born in Kerala in India and my ambition was always to study law and be a lawyer and fight for injustice within the society. But I had to leave studies at the age of 19 to look after my family members and started work in a tea room.  Fourteen years ago, I moved to Cambridge with my wife and I took the opportunity to return to my studies. I am now working in a law firm in Cambridge as a trainee solicitor. I live on Elizabeth Way in East Chesterton where I have brought up my family,

I am proud of the work of the Labour led City Council putting equality and social justice at the heart of its priorities for Cambridge and I hope to use my skills and experience to be an effective champion for all residents in East Chesterton as a ward councillor.

Living as I do in the ward, I know that it is a great place to live.  If elected to the City Council I will work with the other ward councillors, the City Council and the police to tackle problems like anti-social behaviour and poor driving on Fen Road and the High Street which affect residents. I’ll also be fighting to keep vital services from the County Council and Magistrates Court locally for residents in Cambridge.

Don’t forget that on Thursday 3 May you will have two votes to elect two Labour councillors in East Chesterton. I’ll be out with Councillor Gerri Bird, Carla McQueen and the Labour team knocking on doors across the ward to hear your views and how we can work together to make East Chesterton even better.

Please give Labour both of your votes on 3 May and elect a strong team for East Chesterton.
